Cloud migration & modernisation

Cloud migration and application modernisation services

Move to Azure and modernise the applications that matter. Konsolute assesses workload dependencies, chooses what to rehost or redesign, and modernises applications through containers, managed services, APIs and automated delivery where there is a clear business case.

WHAT THIS HELPS YOU ACHIEVE

A migration path with an engineering plan

Separate workloads that can move with limited change from applications that need changes to architecture, code, data or delivery practices.

A path for each workload

Distinguish low-change migration from replatforming and refactoring before committing engineering effort.

More repeatable releases

Replace manual deployment steps with version-controlled builds, configuration and release procedures.

Better platform fit

Choose infrastructure, managed hosting or containers based on application requirements and support capability.

Evidence before cutover

Use rehearsals and application and data checks to decide whether a migration wave is ready.

OUR CLOUD MIGRATION AND MODERNISATION SERVICES

Migration planning and application engineering

Six areas of work that take workloads from on-premises to Azure, with modernisation applied only where it earns its place.

Discovery and migration planning

Assess infrastructure, dependencies and readiness with estate data and Azure Migrate, group workloads into waves and compare rehost, replatform, refactor, retain and retire.

Containerisation

Assess suitability and package eligible services as container images, handling configuration, secrets, persistent data and health checks rather than wrapping a legacy runtime.

Application modernisation

Review runtime versions, application structure and hosting constraints, then plan targeted refactoring, managed hosting or serverless changes that match business value.

Database migration

Assess schema, compatibility and performance before choosing Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance or another target, then plan data movement and validation.

API and event integration

Decouple suitable interactions with APIs, messaging and events, assessing API Management, Service Bus and Functions against contracts, reliability and failure handling.

DevOps and release engineering

Build CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions with infrastructure as code, tests and controlled deployments, plus observability and rollback for each release.

CAPABILITIES & DELIVERY SCOPE

What the technical work covers

Workstreams are selected and scoped around your environment. Each combines technical decisions, implementation tasks and evidence for handover.

Discovery and migration planning

Create a workload inventory that connects infrastructure to applications, databases and business services. Use dependency and readiness evidence to propose dispositions, migration waves and prerequisites.

Workload and dependency inventory Readiness and disposition assessment Migration-wave and cutover plan

Database migration

Evaluate database features, compatibility and performance requirements before selecting a target. Rehearse data movement and checks, then coordinate connection changes and recovery decisions with application cutover.

Database compatibility assessment Data migration and validation Cutover and recovery planning

Containerisation

Create container build definitions for suitable components. Externalise configuration, define health checks and persistent-data handling, and establish image publishing through Azure Container Registry or an agreed registry.

Container and dependency assessment Image build and registry workflow State, secrets and health-check design

Container platform selection

Compare managed container hosting with Kubernetes against the application's orchestration, networking and scaling needs. Where AKS is selected, define cluster, identity, deployment and maintenance responsibilities.

Container Apps versus AKS Networking and scaling requirements Platform support responsibilities

Application modernisation

Assess runtime and library support, deployment assumptions and application boundaries. Build a targeted refactoring backlog with tests, rather than assume a full rewrite is required.

Runtime and dependency upgrades App Service or Functions assessment Refactoring backlog and test coverage

API and event integration

Specify interface contracts and messaging behaviour. Design authentication, retries, idempotency and failed-message handling so new integrations can be operated and diagnosed.

API contracts and gateway design Messaging and event flows Retries, idempotency and failure handling

DevOps and release engineering

Connect source changes to build, test, image publication and deployment stages. Assess deployment slots, revisions or canary patterns where supported, with approvals and rollback designed for the target platform.

Build and deployment pipelines Infrastructure as code Release validation and rollback

Observability and production acceptance

Instrument critical transactions and dependencies. Define functional, load and operational checks, then compare the migrated application against agreed acceptance criteria and expected service behaviour.

TECHNICAL DESIGN DECISIONS

Technical decisions that shape delivery

These choices affect implementation, ongoing operation and the evidence needed to accept the work.

Rehost or modernise deliberately

Use dependency and business-value evidence to choose a disposition per workload. Moving infrastructure and redesigning an application have different costs, risks and acceptance criteria.

Containerisation is an engineering change

Review runtime support, file-system assumptions, sessions and external dependencies. Persistent data and secrets require explicit designs outside the image build.

Avoid unnecessary platform complexity

Compare managed hosting and containers before choosing AKS. Microservices are an option where boundaries and team ownership justify them, rather than a default migration target.

Treat rollback as a data problem too

Application rollback may depend on database compatibility and data written after cutover. Define recovery options and test them alongside the deployment process.

OUR APPROACH

How we deliver cloud migration and modernisation

Six stages take each migration wave from dependency mapping to a validated production service, with cutover rehearsed before it happens.

Discover dependencies

Map servers, application components, interfaces, databases and business-critical dependencies.

Choose the migration path

Assign workload dispositions and define migration waves, modernisation priorities and acceptance criteria.

Design the target

Select hosting, container, integration and data patterns with the network, identity and recovery requirements.

Build and modernise

Implement agreed code, image, infrastructure and pipeline changes with automated checks where appropriate.

Rehearse cutover

Test migration tooling, data validation, deployment procedures and recovery arrangements in representative environments.

Validate production

Check functionality, performance, telemetry and operational ownership before closing the agreed migration wave.

FAQ

Cloud migration and modernisation FAQs

Migration versus modernisation, containers, AKS, microservices, .NET upgrades, SQL Server, cutover, CI/CD and rollback.

Migration changes where a workload runs; modernisation changes how it is built, hosted or operated. A programme can combine low-change moves with selected application, database and deployment improvements.

Yes. Suitability depends on runtime support, dependencies, state, storage, configuration and operational requirements. Some applications fit containers; others are better rehosted, moved to managed hosting or redesigned more substantially.

Aerospace containerisation case study

We compare orchestration needs, networking, scaling, platform control and team skills. Container Apps can reduce infrastructure management for suitable workloads; AKS offers Kubernetes capabilities with greater operational responsibility.

Only where service boundaries, independent delivery and business value justify the change. Targeted refactoring or a modular application can be more appropriate than introducing distributed-system complexity.

Yes. Runtime and library upgrades can be part of the engineering scope, supported by compatibility assessment and testing. We identify code changes, unsupported components and deployment dependencies before committing to an upgrade path.

Application development

We can assess Azure SQL Database, Managed Instance and other appropriate targets against compatibility and operating requirements. Data movement, downtime, validation and application changes are planned per database and migration wave.

We map dependencies, rehearse the migration, validate data and define acceptance and recovery criteria. Downtime depends on the application, data volume and tooling; zero downtime should not be assumed.

We can build application and infrastructure pipelines using Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions. The scope can include build validation, tests, image publishing, approvals and deployment strategies supported by the target platform.

Azure consultancy

We review schema compatibility, backups, data synchronisation and writes made after cutover. The recovery design distinguishes rolling back application code from restoring or reconciling data and is tested within the agreed scope.

The agreed outputs include migrated workloads, relevant code or image changes, deployment configuration, data and application test evidence, operational runbooks and an accepted list of residual issues.
