WHAT THIS HELPS YOU ACHIEVE

Software your business can use, operate and evolve

Connect user experience with dependable services and a maintainable engineering foundation.

Improve the user journey

Make tasks easier to complete through clear interfaces, useful validation and consistent application behaviour.

Remove constraints on change

Address ageing dependencies, tightly coupled components and manual release steps through a prioritised engineering plan.

Connect business capabilities

Design application services, data models and interfaces around the operations and information they support.

Strengthen production readiness

Build testing, telemetry, deployment and recovery into delivery so the application has a defined operating model.

OUR APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT SERVICES

Engineering across the application lifecycle

Build a new application, modernise an existing estate or add delivery capability to your team through a defined engineering workstream.

Application architecture

Assess requirements, existing code and non-functional needs. Define component boundaries, interfaces, data ownership and hosting choices, with decisions about security, scale and the capability needed to operate the solution.

Full-stack development

Develop responsive interfaces, business logic, backend services and data access as a connected application. Deliver working increments with reusable components, explicit validation, code review and tests around the behaviours that matter.

Application modernisation

Review runtimes, dependencies, architecture and deployment practices. Plan upgrades, targeted refactoring, service extraction or phased replacement, with compatibility testing and a transition path that accounts for the existing application.

APIs & connected services

Build application APIs and integrations with Microsoft 365, third-party platforms and existing systems. Define contracts, authentication, data mappings and failure behaviour, using API Management and messaging where they fit the architecture.

Cloud-native engineering

Assess Azure App Service, Functions, Container Apps and AKS against workload requirements. Engineer container packaging, configuration, health behaviour and scaling where appropriate, with persistence, connectivity and runtime ownership planned explicitly.

Quality, release & operations

Implement repeatable checks, controlled deployments and application telemetry. Define environment configuration, migration procedures and recovery criteria, then hand over maintenance, incident and enhancement responsibilities.

CAPABILITIES & DELIVERY SCOPE

Connect the interface, the services and the operating model

The application is treated as a complete system. These workstreams establish how it behaves, how changes reach production and how the team will diagnose and maintain it.

User experience & application journeys

Translate tasks into navigation, screens and meaningful states. Prototype the important journeys and define validation, error and recovery behaviour, with responsive and accessibility requirements included in acceptance criteria.

User journeys and prototypes Responsive and accessible interactions Validation and exception states

Application structure & technical decisions

Define responsibilities and boundaries around the domain and delivery model. Compare a modular application with distributed services, documenting trade-offs in complexity, deployment, performance and supportability.

Component and service boundaries Non-functional requirements Architecture decisions and dependencies

Backend services & business logic

Implement business capabilities through testable services and explicit contracts. Separate long-running work where needed, with concurrency, transaction boundaries and failure handling designed around the operation.

Business rules and service contracts Background processing where required Transaction and concurrency behaviour

Data models & schema evolution

Design records, relationships and constraints against how the application reads and updates information. Plan schema changes, migrations and reconciliation, with privacy, access and retention requirements captured from the business owners.

Data models and integrity rules Schema migration and reconciliation Access and lifecycle requirements

Existing application modernisation

Assess supportability, coupling and the cost of changing the current system. Prioritise runtime upgrades, refactoring and deployment improvements, then validate a staged transition with the existing application and its users.

Code and dependency assessment Upgrade and refactoring backlog Compatibility and transition checks

Application APIs & integration

Connect capabilities through documented APIs, events and supported adapters. Define source ownership and update semantics, with permissions, retries and recovery for external services that are slow, unavailable or ambiguous.

API contracts and integration mappings Authentication and update semantics Retries and failure recovery

Deployment & runtime architecture

Choose hosting and packaging against the workload. Define configuration, infrastructure as code and release gates, with recovery procedures for code and data changes. Container and cluster choices include lifecycle ownership.

Azure hosting and container options CI/CD and environment configuration Release validation and recovery

Testing, telemetry & maintenance

Combine useful automated tests with representative user and operational scenarios. Make failures and service behaviour visible through logs, metrics and traces, then define ownership for alerts, dependency updates and the enhancement backlog.

Functional and non-functional tests Application observability Maintenance and support ownership

TECHNICAL DESIGN DECISIONS

Resolve the decisions that shape future change

Architecture and delivery choices affect how easily the application can be extended, released and supported.

Boundaries before distribution

Define cohesive responsibilities before splitting an application into services. Independent deployment and scaling can be valuable, but add network, consistency and operational demands.

Compatibility through transition

Coordinate changes to runtimes, schemas and interfaces. Validate coexistence and recovery, including records written after a new release goes live.

Requirements before platform selection

Choose Azure hosting and container platforms around execution, scale, connectivity and support needs. Record ongoing responsibilities alongside implementation effort.

Acceptance across the application

Validate user journeys, permission boundaries, data integrity and failure behaviour together. A successful deployment is one part of confirming a usable and operable application.

OUR APPROACH

How we deliver application development

Six stages take your application from requirements to a supported release, with working software demonstrated at every increment.

Discover requirements

Identify users, business outcomes and capabilities needed for the next release.

Assess code and dependencies

Review software, interfaces, data and runtime constraints, recording the evidence needed for decisions.

Design the target

Define application structure, experience, permissions, data and deployment patterns with acceptance criteria.

Develop in increments

Build and demonstrate working software, using code review and repeatable checks to support change.

Validate and release

Test agreed journeys and operating scenarios, then deploy through controlled stages with recovery arrangements.

Operate and improve

Provide assets, documentation and runbooks, with ownership and a prioritised improvement backlog.

FAQ

Application development FAQs

Scope, technology choices, security, ownership and support.

The scope can combine architecture, frontend and backend development, data design, integration, modernisation and production delivery. We agree the capabilities and operating requirements needed for the application rather than treat development as an isolated coding task.

Yes. We assess code, dependencies, architecture and the release process, then prioritise upgrades, refactoring or targeted replacement. The decision considers compatibility, delivery risk and the cost of retaining constraints as well as the effort of a new build.

No. Requirements, existing skills, supportability and platform constraints inform the stack. Azure can provide hosting, integration and operational services, while application technologies are chosen around the workload and team.

Only where independent responsibilities, deployment or scale justify the complexity. A modular application may be more suitable for some requirements. The architecture records trade-offs rather than assume distributed services are necessary for every application.

We can assess containerisation and the runtime changes it needs, then compare AKS with Container Apps or other hosting. Configuration, health behaviour, data persistence and operational ownership are included, with cluster responsibilities defined where AKS is selected.

We define models and constraints alongside business rules, then plan schema changes, migration and reconciliation where required. Recovery accounts for compatibility between releases and any data written after cutover, rather than rely on rolling back code alone.

We assess supported APIs, connectors and messaging against the required operations. Contracts, authentication, ownership and recovery are part of implementation, with external permissions, licensing and interface constraints identified during discovery. See our Microsoft 365 integration and API and system integration services.

We define authentication, permitted actions and data access with the requirements. Implementation can include server-side authorisation, validation, secrets protection and dependency checks. Security scenarios and any specialist testing are agreed for the application and scope.

We combine business-rule and interface tests with end-to-end journeys and operational checks. Accessibility, performance and compatibility requirements are scoped explicitly. Demonstrations and user acceptance help validate whether the application supports the work it was built for.

The contract defines ownership, usage rights, repository access and handover. We identify code, configuration, deployment assets and documentation to be provided, with third-party components and licence conditions recorded.

Discovery and assessment identify capabilities, dependencies and unknowns that affect an estimate. A prioritised backlog and decision points make changes visible. Implementation costs, licensing and ongoing platform consumption are considered separately.

We can scope incidents, dependency updates, runtime changes and new capabilities as ongoing work. Support coverage and response commitments are agreed explicitly, including the split between application ownership, platform operation and external-service responsibilities. See our application support service.
