Information protection & DLP
Microsoft Purview information protection and DLP services
Know where your sensitive information is, label it consistently and stop it leaking through email, Teams, SharePoint or devices. Konsolute designs and implements Microsoft Purview sensitivity labels and data loss prevention around how your people really work.
WHAT THIS HELPS YOU ACHIEVE
Protect sensitive information without stopping people working
Labels and DLP only work when they match real information and real work. We start with the information that matters, design proportionate controls and test them with the people affected, so protection is applied consistently and exceptions are owned.
Know your sensitive information
Identify the information types, locations and owners that need protection, using agreed scenarios rather than guesswork.
Classify consistently
Introduce a sensitivity label set people understand, with defaults and guidance that make the right choice the easy one.
Prevent risky sharing
Apply DLP policies that audit, warn or block the actions that matter, tuned so legitimate work carries on.
Prove it works
Test policies with real users and content, record exceptions and give support teams clear procedures for alerts.
OUR INFORMATION PROTECTION & DLP SERVICES
Microsoft Purview information protection, done properly
Start with a discovery of sensitive information, a sensitivity label rollout, DLP for a priority scenario or a phased programme across Microsoft 365 and devices.
Information discovery & classification
Identify the sensitive information you hold, where it lives and who owns it. Use sensitive information types, classifiers and content explorer where licensed to build an evidence-based baseline.
Sensitivity labels & encryption
Design a label set people understand, with default labels, encryption and visual markings where needed. Pilot with real users and plan for the effect on external sharing and co-authoring.
Data loss prevention policies
Build DLP policies for Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams around agreed scenarios. Start in simulation mode, tune policy tips and false positives, then move to enforcement in stages.
Endpoint DLP
Extend DLP to Windows and macOS devices to control copying to USB, printing and uploads to cloud apps. Coordinate onboarding with Defender for Endpoint and test business applications first.
Copilot & AI data protection
Reduce the risk of Microsoft 365 Copilot surfacing overshared content. Review permissions and labels on sensitive sites and use Purview controls to govern what AI can access and return.
Alerts, exceptions & handover
Define who reviews DLP alerts, how users request exceptions and how policies change. Capture configuration baselines, test evidence and runbooks so your team can operate the controls.
CAPABILITIES & DELIVERY SCOPE
From knowing your information to controlling how it moves
Classification, labelling and DLP depend on each other. We design them together, scoped to the workloads, devices and licences you have, and validated with the people who use the information.
Sensitive information inventory
Agree which information types matter, where they are stored and who owns them, using Purview discovery to replace assumptions with evidence.
- Sensitive information types and classifiers
- Content locations and owners
- Baseline of current exposure
Label set design
Design a small set of labels that match your classification policy, with clear names, descriptions, defaults and guidance people can follow.
- Label names aligned to your policy
- Default and mandatory labelling settings
- User guidance and training material
Label publishing & rollout
Publish labels to pilot groups first, then expand in stages, checking how labels behave across Office apps, Teams, SharePoint sites and email.
- Pilot groups and staged publishing
- Office, Teams and site behaviour
- Auto-labelling where licensed
Encryption & external sharing
Decide where labels apply encryption and test the effect on partners, co-authoring, search and eDiscovery before applying it more widely.
- Encryption and usage rights settings
- Partner and guest access testing
- Impact on search and co-authoring
Microsoft 365 DLP
Build DLP policies for email, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams around agreed scenarios, starting in simulation mode and tuning before enforcement.
- Scenario-based policy design
- Simulation mode and tuning
- Policy tips and justified overrides
Endpoint DLP
Extend protection to managed Windows and macOS devices, controlling USB, printing, browser uploads and unallowed apps for sensitive content.
- Device onboarding prerequisites
- Removable media, print and upload rules
- Business application testing
Alert review & response
Make the route from DLP alert to action clear, with named reviewers, escalation paths and evidence retained under the agreed audit settings.
- Alert triage and escalation ownership
- User exception and override handling
- Audit and investigation evidence
Policy assurance
Document the implemented baseline and how it changes, reviewing false positives, exceptions and new scenarios on an agreed schedule.
- Before-and-after configuration evidence
- False positive and exception review
- Change control and handover documentation
TECHNICAL DESIGN DECISIONS
Protection that fits the way your organisation works
Over-restrictive labels and DLP get bypassed or switched off. We design controls people can live with, test them against real work and record why each exception exists.
Fewer, clearer labels
Keep the label set small and named in plain language. Too many labels lead to wrong choices, inconsistent use and labels that protect nothing.
Simulate before enforcing
Run DLP in simulation first and review matches with business owners, so enforcement blocks real risk rather than everyday legitimate work.
Encryption with care
Apply encryption only where the risk justifies it, testing partner access, search, eDiscovery and co-authoring before rolling it out widely.
Owned exceptions
Record the reason, owner and review date for every exception and override, and avoid broad exclusions where a narrower rule meets the need.
OUR APPROACH
How we deliver information protection and DLP
Six stages take you from discovering your sensitive information to labels and DLP policies that are tested, enforced and owned by your team.
Discover information
Find the sensitive information, locations, owners and sharing patterns in scope.
Design labels & policies
Agree the label set, DLP scenarios, licensing needs and acceptance criteria.
Prepare people
Prepare user guidance, support procedures and alert and exception owners.
Pilot & simulate
Test labels and DLP in simulation with representative users, content and partners.
Enforce in stages
Move policies to enforcement in agreed phases and tune unexpected outcomes.
Hand over & review
Provide configuration records, test results and an agreed review schedule.

WHERE INFORMATION PROTECTION CAN HELP
Start with the information that would hurt most if it leaked
A focused engagement can protect one type of sensitive information or establish a wider classification programme. We confirm the scenarios, licences and owners during discovery.
- Find out where personal, financial or commercially sensitive data is stored
- Introduce sensitivity labels people actually use
- Stop sensitive files being emailed or shared with personal accounts
- Control copying to USB, printing and uploads on managed devices
- Prepare SharePoint and Teams content for Microsoft 365 Copilot
- Tune noisy DLP policies that users have learned to ignore
See it in practice: before rolling out Microsoft 365 Copilot for a central government organisation, Konsolute prepared its data, permissions and governance so staff could use AI safely.

FAQ
Information protection and DLP FAQs
Purview, sensitivity labels, DLP, encryption, Copilot and licensing.
We design and implement Microsoft Purview sensitivity labels, encryption and data loss prevention across the agreed Microsoft 365 workloads and devices. Work can include discovery, label design, DLP policies, endpoint DLP, user guidance and operational handover. We agree the scenarios, licences and deliverables before starting.
Start with the information that would cause most harm if it leaked, and the classification policy you already have. We design a small set of labels that map to it, pilot with representative users and expand in stages, rather than labelling everything on day one.
Not for everything. Some labelling and DLP capabilities are included in common Microsoft 365 plans, while auto-labelling, endpoint DLP and some advanced features need higher licences or add-ons. We review your entitlements and separate what you can do now from what needs additional licensing.
Where licensed, auto-labelling policies can apply labels to content in SharePoint, OneDrive and Exchange based on sensitive information types or classifiers. We run them in simulation first, review the matches with owners and switch them on in stages so labels are applied accurately.
It shouldn’t, if it is designed and tested properly. We start policies in simulation mode, review real matches with business owners and use policy tips and justified overrides where appropriate. Enforcement follows in stages, with an exception process for genuine business needs.
Only where the risk justifies it. Encryption protects content wherever it goes, but it can affect partner access, co-authoring, search and eDiscovery. We test those effects with representative users and partners before applying encryption more widely.
Yes. On managed Windows and macOS devices, endpoint DLP can audit, warn or block copying to removable media, printing and uploads to unallowed sites or apps. Devices must be onboarded first, so we coordinate this with your endpoint protection work.
Copilot works within each user’s existing permissions, so oversharing and missing labels become more visible once it is switched on. We review sharing and labels on sensitive sites and apply Purview controls so Copilot use stays within the protections you set.
Yes. We design label and sharing settings for external collaboration, test how encrypted content behaves for guests and partner organisations, and agree which scenarios need restriction and which need a smoother route. SharePoint and Teams sharing settings are reviewed alongside the labels.
They overlap. This service protects information in Microsoft 365 and on devices through labels and DLP. Governance of analytics data, such as ownership, lineage and quality in Microsoft Fabric, is covered by our data governance service, which can also use Microsoft Purview.
Not automatically. An implementation engagement includes the alert routing and procedures agreed in its scope. Continuous monitoring and response need a separate service covering hours, escalation and response authority between your teams and any providers.
We agree acceptance criteria and test representative users, content and sharing scenarios against the configured labels and policies. The handover records results, false positives, exceptions and remaining actions, so your team has tested behaviour as well as configuration.
