Radioactive Waste Management: An Intranet and Device Rollout for the Merger that Formed NWS
Konsolute supported Radioactive Waste Management through its merger with the Low Level Waste Repository to form Nuclear Waste Services. We implemented a new intranet to connect colleagues across the merging organisations, rolled out devices across the organisation and ran sessions to help people adopt new ways of working.
Overview
Connecting people as two organisations became one
Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) was responsible for planning and delivering a geological disposal facility for the UK's higher-activity radioactive waste. In 2022, RWM merged with the Low Level Waste Repository (LLWR) to form Nuclear Waste Services (NWS), part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority group.
A merger brings people together who have worked in different places, with different systems and cultures. For the new organisation to work as one, colleagues needed a shared place for news, information and people, and the right tools to do their jobs.
Konsolute implemented a new intranet as part of the merger, giving colleagues from both organisations a single hub for communication. We also rolled out devices across the organisation and ran sessions to help staff get the most from their new tools.
The challenge
One organisation, built from two
Before the merger, RWM and LLWR each had their own ways of sharing information internally. Bringing them together risked confusion over where to find news, policies and contacts, and could leave colleagues feeling disconnected from the new organisation.
People also needed devices and tools that would support the new organisation's ways of working. Rolling those out had to be planned around people's day-to-day work and supported with practical help.
The merging organisations needed to:
Our approach
Bring people together, then equip and support them
We focused on the people experiencing the merger: what they needed to feel connected, informed and able to work effectively from day one.
Intranet requirements. Konsolute worked with stakeholders from the merging organisations to understand what colleagues needed from an intranet, including news, policies, people information and links to everyday tools.
Intranet implementation. We designed and implemented the intranet in Microsoft 365, giving the new organisation a single, branded hub for internal communication. Content and navigation were structured so colleagues from either organisation could find what they needed.
Device rollout. Devices were rolled out across the organisation, configured and ready to use. The rollout was planned around teams and locations to minimise disruption to people's work.
Sessions and adoption. Konsolute ran sessions to introduce colleagues to the intranet, their devices and new ways of working. These gave people practical, hands-on guidance and a chance to ask questions.
Result
A connected organisation from the start
Colleagues from RWM and LLWR gained a single intranet for news, information and people as they came together as NWS. Internal communication had one clear home, helping the new organisation build a shared identity.
Devices were rolled out across the organisation, giving people the tools they needed for the new ways of working. Hands-on sessions helped colleagues adopt those tools with confidence.
The work helped lay digital workplace foundations for NWS as a combined organisation.
Your questions
Merger intranet and device rollout FAQs
An intranet gives colleagues from each organisation one place for news, policies and people, helping them work and communicate as one. For RWM and LLWR, Konsolute implemented an intranet as part of the merger that formed NWS. Content and navigation should work for people from every predecessor organisation.
By planning the rollout around teams and locations and providing practical support. Konsolute rolled out devices across RWM and supported staff with sessions on using them. Clear communication about timing helps people prepare.
Sessions help people understand what has changed and how to use new tools in their own work. For RWM, they covered the intranet, devices and new ways of working. Adoption support often determines whether new technology delivers its benefits.
